7 Mistakes Made by Buyers of 10-12 Meter Sailboats in Barcelona

Buying a second-hand sailboat between 10 and 12 meters in Barcelona seems straightforward until you discover that the Catalan market has its own traps. These are the mistakes we see repeated time and again, and what it costs to correct them once the deal is signed.
Error 1: buying based on photos without inspection in dry dock
Dock photos hide what really matters. The hull below the waterline, the keels, the rudders, and the saltwater intakes can only be seen with the boat out of the water. A buyer who skips this step often discovers advanced osmosis, structural cracks, or poorly executed repairs that triple the initial budget.
Error 2: trusting the seller's word about the rigging
"The rigging was changed recently" is the most repeated phrase in the marinas. Without a dated shipyard invoice, assume it hasn't been touched. A complete change of cables and tensioners on a 12-meter sailboat exceeds 6,000 euros. Ask for paperwork or budget for the expense.
Error 3: ignoring the actual hours of the auxiliary engine
The hour meter may be broken or disconnected. Request maintenance invoices and check the oil condition, smoke color, and vibrations when starting cold. A marine diesel engine with over 3,000 hours without major service can leave you stranded on the first outing or cost you a complete replacement.
Error 4: not testing the electronics under real load
Turning on the GPS at the dock is not the same as using it while sailing with autopilot, active radar, and all displays on. Many electrical failures only appear when the system is working: power cuts, batteries that can't hold a charge, wiring that overheats. Demand a sea trial of at least two hours with everything turned on.
Error 5: forgetting the mooring cost before buying
A 12-meter sailboat in Barcelona costs between 6,000 and 12,000 euros annually just for mooring, depending on the port and season. Many buyers calculate the boat but not the place to leave it. Before signing, secure a spot on the waiting list or get a mooring quote at the port you are interested in.
Error 6: skipping the consultation at the Registry of Movable Property
Mortgages, liens, port community debts, or pending taxes are attached to the boat, not the owner. An apparently cheap sailboat can carry burdens that cost you more than the vessel itself. The consultation costs less than 30 euros and avoids years of legal problems.
Error 7: not defining the actual use before looking at boats
A 10-meter sailboat for weekend getaways with a partner is not the same as a 12-meter one for living aboard for six months or sailing with a family of three children. Each use requires different cabin layouts, water capacity, kitchen equipment, and storage space. Looking at boats without being clear on this leads you to buy the wrong sailboat for your life.
